I had one that wouldn’t put up curtains but would try to do us for damages when we put them up.
Yorkshire – January 9, 2025
Lived in West Yorkshire for 9 months the day my job finished I was out.
My clothes were mouldy and wet literally like they had just got out the washer.
It was so much damp my electrics blew up.
My landlord lived below/ behind me but I couldn’t contact him, only the estate agents.
I came back from a week long half term to find stripes of black mould along every ceiling beam. I found out from a building inspector that it was caused by various things including no guttering just exposed wooden beams on the wet pennines. The day I moved out he sent someone over to start fixing it.
400 a month for a one bed house with no parking, garden and it literally was inches from the main road to the m62.
GRIM!
Newcastle upon Tyne, Jesmond area – April 18, 2024
Our carbon monoxide alarm was going off and we messaged the landlord and he told us to remove the battery.
Sussex – April 18, 2024
We went into the basement of our rented house and found a fully built 6 person sailing boat, complete with sails, fishing gear and lifebelts. There was only one small door in or out of the basement and no windows.

What we pay Vs what they will charge new tenants..
We moved into this 1 bed flat, or maisonette rather.(Haringey, zone 3 is all I will share) The location is phenomenal, super close to tube station, shops etc. private parking, small grass patch at the front. We have loved living here but we’re in the process of buying a flat.
We moved in May 2021 and paid £1200/month. Then late 2022 I think, landlord put up rent to £1250 In Feb 2024 he very apologetically said he needs to start charging £1450. We honestly couldn’t argue, I knew we have been incredibly lucky/privileged to pay such “low” rent.
The new estate agent he’s using just came by to check the flat. He said this flat will go for £1800 – £2000 month for new tenants!! I absolutely can’t believe it! I thought they’d probably start asking around £1500-1600 when we go, but holy hell, up to £2000 a month for a 1 bed maisonette.
Lincoln – April 10, 2024
My children and myself have been made homeless by the landlord – who described me as “the perfect tenant” – because he had an affair and needs us out so he has somewhere to live.
The council have advised me to “just stay in the property until the landlord gets a repossession order from court.”
How is this shit happening to people?
London – April 9, 2024
I was taken to hospital with Pneumonia and was told I had mould growing on the inside of my lungs, from the mould growing behind our bed. When we moved out the landlord said he might have to charge us for the post it note “stains” on the wall.

Our shower drain pipe was leaking into the ceiling and coming through the kitchen ceiling.
The maintenance man said that we ‘just needed to make sure we used the shower curtain properly’ as he accused us of spraying water all over the bathroom floor and it leaking through the ceiling like that .
A couple of months later the ceiling caved in and a part of the pipe fell into the kitchen. We had to turn the water off at the mains and had no water for 3 weeks, we had to move out.
Turns out they’d used the wrong size pipe because the system had been installed in the 70s so they couldn’t match it so just tried to secure the wrong size pipe so it had slowly been leaking every time we used the shower since we had moved in a year ago and everything was damp and rotten under the vinyl.

We received a huge telling off from the letting agent when we moved out because the tumble dryer was broken. It was broken when we moved in and were told at the time “it’s more expensive to fix than replace” (which apparently was an end to the situation).
We sent them the email where they told us this about the dryer, and then instead of acknowledging that/apologising they took £62 out of our deposit to “replace some lightbulbs” 🫠

I have recently left a property after a year’s fixed term tenancy.
On the day I checked out of the property I received an invoice from the letting agency for one day’s rent to cover the extra day due to the leap year.
My contract specified that the tenancy is fixed term for 12 months, and that rent is to be paid “per calendar month”.
Anonymous renting horror stories from tenants in the UK. We might regret this, but at the same time give us what you’ve got.
