Moved in, turned out the shower wasn’t working, asked the agency to fix it. They informed us that the property “was not advertised with a functioning shower”

Glasgow – April 5, 2024
Ceiling fell in after a leak in the roof (that we told landlord about and he ignored)
After being forced to fix it Mr. “I Don’t receive Letters” Landlord didn’t plaster the ceiling properly and just patched it with roll on plaster and loads of bits of random wallpaper which he painted white, badly.
The roof is leaking again because the first job was done so badly…
Newcastle – April 5, 2024
We reported the fact the kitchen floor was falling in due to dry rot. The guy who inspected it said I didn’t know what I was talking about and mentioned that girls always complain. He said it was brick dust because it was red. They got someone else in to assess it they confirmed it was dry rot and they evicted us because the whole house ended up being condemned
Kent – April 5, 2024
My next-door neighbour asked me if my landlord was doing work inside my flat as he’d been letting himself in during the day whilst I was at work at least 2 times a week for months. He was not doing any work, and I was completely unaware he was letting himself in. I was living there as a single woman.
Canterbury – April 4, 2024
When I lived in my final student house (with 3 others), we all cleaned it within an inch of its life when we moved out. The landlord decided to bring the builders in, waited until they’d left to do the final check out inventory and tried to charge us for the builders mess. Absolutely not!

Three weeks of random people turning up for viewings whilst we were in the process of moving out, because the estate agent was too busy to show them round (yes we were very honest with the prospective tenants!). Estate agent then sent an email asking where the washing machine was. This would be the washing machine that broke, the landlord refused to replace, so we replaced it and took it with us. Estate agents response was to tell us that we should have left it to make up for losing them potential tenants by being honest during the viewings we weren’t expecting!
Plymouth – March 29, 2024
Called the landlady out for a major leak from an upstairs bathroom – through this it turns out we were getting heavy metal poisoning from the severely corroded lead pipes that were still being used to supply drinking water to the entire house. Apologies? Repiping? Nah
Chester – March 24, 2024
Flat was robbed while I was away. Got back at midnight to my lock busted open. Waited outside for 3hrs for the cops.
Turns out the letting Co had been there the day before and noticed the break in. Didn’t call cops or notify me. Presumed “a domestic dispute” and didn’t go inside. I could have been dead.
They refused to speak directly to the police too. Very confusing reaction.
Crewe – March 24, 2024
Almost had £50 deposit taken because a bulb blew as we were packing our last things. Didn’t have ladders or furniture to stand on so bought a new bulb and left the bulb in the room in clear view.
Got the email saying they were charging us for a broken bulb. We sent a dated pic we took with the bulb on the shelf. They retracted the payment. Always document everything!
Anonymous renting horror stories from tenants in the UK. We might regret this, but at the same time give us what you’ve got.
