London – December 17, 2023
First flat I moved into after uni, it wasn’t amazing but was cheap enough that I didn’t care. 6 people in total.
A couple weeks before lockdown tenant A wakes up with bites all over his body and finds bedbugs in his bed. The agency takes weeks to respond and he has to pay out of pocket for the treatment.
A few weeks before this, tenant B’s mum has moved into his room. She has started eating our food and we can’t communicate with her as she doesn’t speak English. No one knows why she has moved into our flat or how long she’ll be staying, despite the “no overnight guests” rule in our contract.
The bedbugs start coming back and they’re not able to find a nest in A’s room. He’s also come home to his draws and cupboards being open, meaning someone else may have the code to his door.
Most people in the house had to go and live with family as the agency weren’t doing anything about the bugs. Tenant B gets evicted as his mum has been living with him in the house for over a month. The bedbug nest was found in his room, and I’m unsure if the agency did anything about it before the next tenant moved in.
Bristol – December 14, 2023
Rented an unfurnished flat. Turns out it was furnished. Showed up on the moving day and it was furnished with a mix of cheap landlord furniture and crap left from the last tenants. The letting agent said they would get it removed and it took 7 weeks for it to happen. SEVEN WEEKS.
Ely – December 9, 2023
Lived with an old buddy who turned out super clingy and loved to hoard stuff. Things went south when they messed with my job and I had to cut ties. They flipped out, wrecked our place, broke a bunch of my things, and then tried to pin it all on me.
Peterborough – December 9, 2023
My landlord refused to fix the heating in the middle of winter.
Manchester – November 23, 2023
Landlord wanted a £400 monthly increase to the rent (wild!). He wouldn’t negotiate, some we moved out and it’s now being advertised only for only £200 more, not £400.
London – November 23, 2023
About 1 month after moving in and the weather began to get warmer I noticed I can not open any of my windows they are all wooden and sealed shut probably due to age. I contacted my landlord and he came round himself to fix however he couldn’t so he told me he would have all the windows replaced.
After months of nothing happening, I’ve now been finding slugs all over the house.
Nottingham – October 31, 2023
My landlord asked if I was going home for Christmas and I said it was. Christmas sucked so I came back early and found my landlord and three of his buddies smoking fags, drinking cider and playing poker in my living room.
Salford – October 31, 2023
The landlady was always dropping by unannounced, straight up barging in with her key without even giving a courtesy knock. It used to bug us, but since we had nothing to hide, we didn’t make a big deal out of it. That is until the day she brought her husband over to do some unwanted maintenance. See, all of us living there were ladies, so we never gave a second thought to casually strolling from the bathroom to our bedrooms wrapped in nothing but a towel. But guess what? I ended up stuck in the bathroom for a solid half hour (no way was I walking past that old dude in a skimpy towel) while he messed around with something right outside the damn door.
Leeds – October 31, 2023
Moved into my flat in the summer. Everything was hunky dory, dry and sunny. Come winter it’s damp and covered in mould. COVERED. Four months of complaining to the landlord, nothing has been done.
Manchester – October 31, 2023
My landlord is raising the rent by a massive 22% (£300 per month). I can’t afford it, and when I told him, he said I should move out. I’ve been here for four years.
Anonymous renting horror stories from tenants in the UK. We might regret this, but at the same time give us what you’ve got.
